Crypto mining app for MacOS launched
If you’re working on a Mac you can now earn crypto by using HoneyMiner, a desktop-based crypto mining application.
HoneyMiner launched in 2018 for Windows, and the latest Mac version operates in exactly the same way. The application accesses your CPU or GPU and uses it to mine various cryptos. A central server points the connected machines at a certain target like ethereum, ethereum classic, zcash, monero and other GPU-friendly currencies.
Noah Jessop, co-founder and CEO said, “We have over 1,400 different kinds of GPUs on our network and it’s all about routing the right computation to its most optimal use case and whichever chain is optimal.”
Mac users launching the app receive 1,000 free satoshi for doing so. Don’t get too excited, as this is about equivalent to $0.06. The HoneyMiner app takes 2.5% of the proceeds for multi-GPU machines and 8% from single GPU users.
John Biggs writing for Coindesk tested HoneyMiner out on his 2016 MacBook Pro running a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 and found he was able to earn around six cents in ten minutes. Over a 24-hour period he netted 113 satoshis with a USD value of $0.012. As he points out, users with more powerful computers will speed up the mining pool considerably.
HoneyMiner launched for MacOs due to public demand. Jessop said, “We launched on Windows first because there are so many powerful GPUs sitting under people’s desks around the world and lots of folks getting started with mining do so on windows. We’ve now got people in 167 countries on HoneyMner and have had literally hundreds of requests for Mac OS from our community.”
As Jessop explained, adding MacOS to the service was something of a challenge: “Mac was really tricky to run super smoothly on both CPU and GPU when available team spent months — maybe even too long — making it work. If we let everyone mine with the efficiency of the pros, software know-how becomes less of a barrier.”
