Sergey Brin made a shock announcement at the blockchain summit in Morocco this week when he told the audience that he is also an Ethereum miner.
Brin, who is the president of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, described the activity as his ‘side hustle’ and apparently mining ETH is a hobby he shares with his 10-year-old son.
He was discussing the fact that most of Google’s success was down to taking emerging technologies seriously over the years and being able to spot the technology that potentially provides an evolutionary leap, and he said that he thinks that is what crypto developers and the thinkers behind it have also done.
He described cryptocurrencies as “mind boggling” and the global crypto network as “extraordinary” for the way in which they have spread public key cryptography across the web and created consensus algorithms such as proof-of-work.
He also showed his enthusiasm for the concept of zero-knowledge proofs behind “anonymity-oriented altcoins” such as Zcash. “I see the future as taking these…research-y, out-there ideas and making them real,” he said.
Brin has spoken in favour of the leading cryptocurrencies like Ethereum before and attributes the current “momentous computing boom” to their existence. He also admitted in Morocco, when asked about the Google ban on crypto advertising that “the company has failed to be on the bleeding edge when it comes to embracing crypto.”
It is just as well that Sergey Brin is a billionaire, because mining ETH doesn’t come cheap. Let’s say it’s a very expensive hobby!
