Serena Williams, best known for her tennis skills, launched Serena Ventures, an investment business, in 2014. It has invested in 30 companies to date and one of them is the major US-based exchange, Coinbase.
According to the official website of Serena Ventures, the market cap of the portfolio is over $12 billion. The website further notes that the fund is focused on early stage companies, encourages collaboration among portfolio companies and expands partnership opportunities.
The tennis star, who is married to Alexis Ohanion — the founder of Reddit, says in her Serena Ventures mission statement: “In 2014, I launched Serena Ventures with the mission of giving opportunities to founders across an array of industries. Serena Ventures invests in companies that embrace diverse leadership, individual empowerment, creativity and opportunity.
Serena Ventures focuses on early stage companies, and giving them the opportunity to be heard. As we grow, we hope to mentor young founders and take burgeoning entrepreneurs to the next level. Serena Ventures extends relationships, encourages collaboration among portfolio companies, and expands partnership opportunities across my vast network. Similar to many of the companies we have invested in, we are just getting started and are hoping to make a difference.”
Williams won four gold medals at the Olympics, and the Women’s Tennis Association ranked her world №1 in singles on eight separate occasions. Moreover, in August last year her estimated net worth was thought to be about $180 million.
